This week we read about the life of Johnny Appleseed by Stephen Kellogg. As we read the story, we discussed the rich vocabulary like boisterous and tranquil. Friday, we wrote a class report about him. We wrote facts, illustrated the pages and recorded our class reading each page. Here is the finished digital book. We hope you enjoy it. We had a great time creating it.
At the beginning of the year our class learns about using science tools including our five senses. This year we used our observation skills to discover what happens when you put a soapy finger in water with floating pepper. We made a quick video to share our discovery and offer some suggestions to extend the learning at home. We hope you enjoy.
Friday, we were surprised by a most unusual box. The box was delivered from the office. It was covered with O's or zeros. In the box was a letter, a cape, a bag of mini donuts and Zero the Hero. Zero the Hero came to celebrate the 10th day of school and let us know the importance of the number zero. We read a story about how Zero the Hero came to be, sang a Zero the Hero song counting to 100, took our picture with Zero and the cape, and enjoyed the delicious donuts. Zero wrote a letter to us letting us know that he would be back every ten days with another surprise treat, all in the shape of a zero.
I can't wait to see what he brings next!
Our first week of school is finished. We had a wonderful week getting to know each other, learning the rules, classroom expectations and building a class community. We read many books this week, including Twas the Night Before First Grade, First Grade Here I Come, Pete the Cat and His White Shoes, Pete the Cat and His Four Buttons, and The Crayon Box That Talked. We discussed school rules and created a list of our class rules. We sequenced the events in the Pete the Cat and His White Shoes story and created our own cats. We made the shoes our favorite color.
Here is a sample of our cats.
A few weeks ago, our class read different versions of the story, Henny Penny. After reading and discussing the stories, we wrote our own versions of the story. They turned out so well that we decided to make them digital stories. I hope you enjoy them as much as we did. The stories are here or you can watch them on you tube at http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLkBy24txQpZ8JshQDiuQKW2Z8EMhdQe6q
Recently, our reading theme was birds. We read an informational story about a Hungry Pelican and read nonfiction books about penguins. We used what we learned to write penguin reports. In media, Mrs. Fay read a story called, Nothing Like A Puffin. In the story, the puffin was compared to many things that were slightly like it; same color, had two legs, had wings, could swim.... Since we learned so much about penguins, we created a class digital book called Something Like A Penguin. The students took pictures with the I-touch, wrote their parts of the story and recorded their reading. Thank you to Mrs. Fay for all of the help in making this project. We hope you enjoy it.
